Located between Wakefield and Brighouse and near the River Calder, Dewsbury has long been an important West Yorkshire market town that has often been cited as important during the industrial revolution.
With good access links to Wakefield on the A638 and Brighouse on the A644, Dewsbury used to be a major textile producer and centre for trade. Part of the metropolitan borough of Kirklees, Dewsbury was famed for its production of shoddy, a form of recycled wool mixed with new wool. The town’s industrial past can be seen in the architecture, especially in the iconic Dewsbury Town Hall, which was once a woollen mill.
